Chapter 4 - God and His wrath
There is one attribute of God that most people do not want to believe: His wrath. They say, “God is love; since He is love, He will never get angry. He loves unconditionally.” While it is true that God is a God of love, and that His love is unconditional in the sense that we are saved purely by His mercy and grace (unmerited favor), there are many biblical verses that speak clearly about His wrath. Here, we will look at just these two verses:
Romans 1:18:
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”
John 3:36:
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
We will consider these four questions to understand the wrath of God:
I. To whom did God reveal His wrath?
It is very clear in Romans 1:18 that God reveals His wrath against all ungodliness and unrighteousness, and against those who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness. Who are these people? The answer is: all people, without exception.
As Romans 3:10 says, “There is none righteous, no, not one.”
This is the truth, my friend: we are all sinners. We have broken God’s law, we are unrighteous, and we have suppressed the truth. Because of our ungodliness and sin, we are spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1), and because of our sin, we will all face death as its penalty (Romans 6:23). This is the expression of God’s wrath, my friend.
II. Who will receive eternal life?
While it is true that all of us are sinners, dead in sin and destined for death, God in His love, mercy, and grace gave His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a perfect life, paid our debt by His blood, died on the cross, and drank the cup of God’s wrath (Matthew 26:39), so that we can have peace with God through faith (Romans 5:1; Romans 3:25). The Lord Jesus rose again on the third day, so that whoever believes in Him, though dead, will live.
So, who will receive eternal life?
The answer: Those who put their faith in the finished work of the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
III. Who will continue to be recipients of His wrath?
John 3:36 is very clear:
“He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
This means that those who rebel against God through unbelief will continue to face His wrath. This is serious, my friend. While you are still breathing, repent and believe in Christ.
IV. How will God display His wrath?
There will come a day when God will fully display His wrath in judgment, as Romans 2:5 says:
“But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.”
God will reveal His wrath on the Day of Judgment. Those who continue to rebel against the Son of God will face God’s wrath in hell. Hell is real, and it is not a place anyone should desire to go. It is the place where God will display the fullness of His wrath.
As explained in Revelation 21:8:
“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Conclusion:
My friend, it is not too late. God has provided a Savior who intercedes for us so that we can have peace with God. His name is Jesus Christ — our mediator, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Repent from your sin and put your faith in Christ, and you will be saved — not only from sin, but also from the wrath to come.
