Chapter 9 - Jesus Christ the eternal Son of God

John 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

John 1:14 – “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.”

Introduction

Many people and religious groups deny the divinity of Jesus. One reason they believe that Jesus is not God but only a man is that they think He began to exist when He was born of the virgin Mary. However, Scripture clearly describes the existence of the Lord Jesus Christ before His birth. While it is true that His humanity began when He was born, we cannot deny the Bible’s testimony that He existed from eternity past.

In this post, we will discuss the first proof that Jesus existed before the foundation of the world, continues to exist today, and will exist forever.

But first of all, there is no doubt that the “Word” in John 1 refers to the One who dwelt among men, as written in verse 14. This Word is none other than Jesus Christ.

Let us examine the sentence structure of the verse: “In the beginning was the Word.” This clearly shows that the Word existed before the beginning. The proof is in the word was. “Was” is the main verb of the sentence, indicating existence in the past—and, in this case, continuous existence from the very beginning. Now, what is the scriptural proof of His pre-existence?

A. He is the Creator of the Universe together with the Father

Christ Himself is the Creator of the universe, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Genesis 1 narrative confirms that the Creator, Elohim, is a plural form but is referred to as singular. This confirms that the Creator of the universe is one God who exists in three Persons, as Genesis 1:26 affirms with the phrase, “Let us make man in our image…”

John 1:3 declares that through Him all things were made. Colossians 1:16 affirms that by Him all things were created. Hebrews 1:2 also states that Christ is the Creator of the world.

Furthermore, Jesus Christ Himself declared that before Abraham existed, He already was:

John 8:58 – “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.’”

B. He is the Creator of Time

Time on earth began the moment God spoke and brought the universe into existence. John 1:1 makes it clear that in the beginning, the Word already existed. This demonstrates His existence not only before the creation of the physical world but also before the creation of time itself.

As Psalm 90:4 says:

“For a thousand years in your sight

are but as yesterday when it is past,

or as a watch in the night.”

This confirms that the Word is not bound by time. He exists outside of time because He is the Creator of time itself.

C. He is the Source of Everything

John 1:3 – “All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”

The Bible is very clear that the source of everything in the entire universe is the Word Himself. Colossians 1:17 says He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

This proves that the Word—the Lord Jesus Christ—is worthy of all praise and worship because He is the eternal Son of God, the Creator of the universe, and the beginning of all things. Without Him, we are nothing.

Conclusion

Everything we see, feel, and hear—from living beings to non-living things—came into existence through the Word. The Word who became flesh and dwelt among men is Christ. He gave life to every human being. However, there is a problem: we, as human beings, have violated the law of God. We have sinned against the Creator who gave us life. All of us have broken God’s law (Romans 3:10, 23), and because of this, we are spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1–4). God’s wrath is upon all sinners (Romans 1:18), and we all face the wages of sin, which is death (Romans 6:23).

That is why we need Christ—the Eternal Son of God, the Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He is the Creator who existed before the world was made. He became a man to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15; Matthew 5:17). He suffered and died on the cross, shedding His blood for the redemption of His people (1 Peter 1:18–19). He rose again so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

My friend, you cannot escape the wrath of God simply by doing good deeds. You need someone who can take away your sin. You need someone who has the power to give you eternal life—and that someone is Christ alone, through faith alone.

Repent now and put your faith in Christ alone.
