There is only one God, and He alone is great. All other beings and things are totally dependent upon His goodness and strength. A comparison should never be made between God and any other creature or thing. As the self-existent Creator, He is infinitely above His dependent and finite creation. The mightiest archangel is no closer to being like God than the tiniest microbe.
God is incomparable! In the context of the body of believers, this truth is extremely important.
There are no great men or women of God in the Scriptures or in Church history; there are only weak, sinful, and faithless men and women of a great and merciful God!
1. How is God described in the following Scriptures?
a. The Lord is a great G___________(God) and a great K_________________ (King)(Psalm 95:3).
b. The Lord is the G__________________ (Great) and A(Awesome)_____________________ God (Daniel 9:4).
NOTES: The word “awesome” comes from the Hebrew word yare which means, “to fear, revere, or be afraid.” Even the smallest revelation of God’s greatness and holiness would strike even the most splendid of His creatures with astonishment, reverence, and even fear.
God is awesome; therefore, He is worthy of the greatest reverence.
c. The Lord is very G (Great)__________________; He is clothed with splendor and majesty (Psalm 104:1).
NOTES: God’s splendor and majesty are not some external things that He puts on; they are a part of His very being. Unlike men, God has no need to add something to Himself in order to enhance His greatness or His beauty.
2. How is the greatness of God described in Psalm 145:3?
a. His greatness is U(Unsearchable)_____________________________.
NOTES: God’s greatness is beyond investigation or inquiry—it cannot be searched out or measured. It would be far easier to count the sand in all the oceans and deserts of the world or to number all the stars in the heavens than to measure the greatness of God.
3. What do the following Scriptures affirm about the greatness of God? How is the one true God contrasted with all other so-called gods?
a. Psalm 77:13
“Ps 77:13: "Thy way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?"
The God of Christianity is Holy, meaning the God that we worship is absolutely Pure and absolutely otherness, which means that He is absolutely separated from any impurities and absolutely different even in his Creation. No one can compare or there is no other God besides Him, and there is no Great God like the God of Christianity.
b. Psalm 86:10
Ps 86:10: "For thou art great and doest wondrous things,
thou alone art God."
The Psalmist declared not just the greatness of God, but also proclaimed that the Great God is doing wondrous things. There is only one God.
c. Psalm 95:3
The verse doesn’t just proclaim the greatness of God, but also proclaimed how great is He.
d. Psalm 135:5
Ps 135:5: "For I know that the LORD is great,
and that our Lord is above all gods."
The psalmist confirmed that the Lord is great. People may have these many versions of god, but those who are considered gods are icomparable to the one true God.
4. According to the following Scriptures, what should be our attitude and our response to the greatness of God? How should we live in light of His unsearchable greatness?
a. Deuteronomy 32:3
Deu 32:3: "For I will proclaim the name of the LORD.
Ascribe greatness to our God!"
Our attitude and our response to the greatness of God is not be quite about it, but to proclaim this great God to all people. We must also ascribe everything to God, all glory only belongs to Him.
b. I Chronicles 16:25
1Chr 16:25: "For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods."
His greatness leads us to praise Him even more. Not just praise but also fear Him, Honor Him, and respect Him.
c. Psalm 104:1
Ps 104:1: "Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honor and majesty."
When we know how great our God is, this will lead people to bless him, meaning we must joyfully exclaimed our adminiration, thanksgiving and praise.
NOTES: The word “bless” comes from the Hebrew word barak. When directed toward God, it denotes a joyful exclamation of admiration, thanksgiving, and praise.
d. Psalm 111:2
Ps 111:2: "The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein."
Those who know the greatness of God were those who seek Him, study His Word, and find pleasure.
e. Psalm 138:5
Ps 138:5: "and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD,
for great is the glory of the LORD."
Another expression of God’s people towards His greatness is having singing heart. The Psalmists often times cannot contain the greatness of God, and these leads for them to sing a song for Him.
